Orthodontic FAQ

Invisalign

How often should I wear my Invisalign aligners?

Aligners should always be worn 22 hours a day.

When should I remove my aligners?

Aligners should be removed to eat and drinking anything except cool water.

Will the treatment be painful?

Most people experience tooth soreness for a few days after starting each new tray (tray 1 is the worst). This is normal and a sign that the aligners are working. Any OTC pain medication can be taken during this time. A few canker sores may also develop periodically.

Will wearing Invisalign affect my speech?

Like all orthodontic treatments, aligners may temporarily affect speech resulting in a mild lisp. This usually goes away after a few days. During this time more saliva production is also normal.

Will I be finished with my treatment when I get to the last tray?

Almost all patients require 1–2 rounds of aligners to perfect their bite. After you have been scanned for a new set please wear your current aligners only at night until the new ones arrive.

Retainers

How long do I have to wear the retainers?

Forever. Everything wrinkles as we get older...including your teeth. Wearing the retainer is your best bet to maintain the majority of the correction.

How long do retainers last?

Retainers generally last 1-2 years. They will periodically need to be replaced similar to eye glasses.

What happens if I lose or break my retainer?

Give us a call ASAP. We will need to take a new mold. Broken or lost retainers are covered under the Smile Warranty program and/or may be covered by your insurance. If you don’t have either, replacement costs are $250 each.

Will wearing Retainers affect my speech?

Like all orthodontic treatments, retainers may temporarily affect speech resulting in a mild lisp. This usually goes away after a few days. During this time more saliva production is also normal.

Do I need to come back?

Yes, but only a couple more times. We like to check your retainers in 3 months and also at 6 months. After that, you will be on a call us if you need us basis. And if you know anyone that needs braces, please send them our way. We would love to have more patients like you!!!
